Nerve gas

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

Nerve gas, a chemical weapon was used in the war. It affects the transmission of nerve impulses. During World War II Germany developed the organ phosphorous nerve agents like tabun, sarin and soman. But fortunately this weapon was not used. During the Cold War condition, a new Nerve gas agent named ‘VX’ was produced in large numbers as a precautionary weapon. These agents were banned by the ‘chemical weapons convection’ Act of 1993.

When these agents are inhaled or in contact with skin, it enters into the blood stream and thereby enters into the nervous system to cause respiratory failure and immediate death. In 1995 Sarin was used in a lethal attack in Tokyo.
